While not widely discussed, there are a few conversations among those who worked at HSV and Holden dealerships about the HSV Jackaroo and Jackaroo SE. These vehicles, produced from 1993 to 1995, were unique outliers in the HSV lineup. Not only were they proven off-road champions, with victories in the 1992 and 1993 Australian Safari and the 1994 Paris to Dakar rally's where they finished 12th overall and 1st in the Marathon class.
From what I understand, by 1996, HSV had considered the possibility of placing a Holden 5.0L V8 engine into both the Jackaroo and the Rodeo. However, this idea was quickly shot down, as it would have had a major impact on the sales of the SS Commodore. It’s believed that the concept didn't progress beyond early discussions.
Despite this setback, the Jackaroo continued to compete in off-road events until 2002, with multiple teams and drivers behind the wheel. Fast-forward to 2001, and the concept came to life, albeit under Holden's banner instead of HSV. Known as the Jack8, this vehicle featured the Jackaroo's front half, but with a convertible rear and major cosmetic updates. It was powered by the powerful LS1 V8 engine.
It’s fascinating to think about what might have been if the HSV Jackaroo had been more widely accepted and embraced in the market.
